Arriving from the airport or from the Mpumalanga/Durban direction:
Get on the M2 West towards the centre of Johannesburg. You will pass the Johannesburg CBD, and then follow the arrows onto the M1 North (towards Sandton and Pretoria). Take the Empire Road offramp from the M1 North, and turn left into Empire Road.

Arriving from the Bloemfontein/Kimberley direction:
Get on the M1 North towards the centre of Johannesburg and pass the CBD. Take the Empire Road offramp from the M1 North, and take the slipway West (left) onto Empire Road.

Arriving from the Pretoria/Polokwane direction:
Get on the M1 South towards the centre of Johannesburg. Take the Empire Road offramp from the M1 South and turn right into Empire Road.

Once on Empire Rd, the SABC is visible ahead in the distance. Stay on Empire Rd and drive alongside the Rea Vaya bus route. Pass the SABC, where the road becomes Kingsway. At the intersection where Kingsway crosses Beyers Naude Drive / University Road (M5), take a left into University Road. You are now on the map below. Turn right at the traffic circle into Ditton Avenue, and arrive at the campus at Gate 2. After the gate, turn left, and you reach a large parking area. From there follow the arrows to the venue.

It is about 4 km from the M1 highway to the conference venue.

USING EXPRESS TRANSPORT NETWORKS IN JOHANNESBURG
[notes compiled by an LOC member who is a regular user of all the lines mentioned]

The two linked networks are the Gautrain and The Rea Vaya BRT ('Bus Rapid Transit') system.

Each of these systems (respectively) requires the purchase of a user card before any trips can be made. The cost is nominal (R25 per card) and the purchase fee then becomes part of the account available for trip charges. The cards can only be purchased at Gautrain and Rea Vaya stations (respectively). This can be done immediately before a trip is taken. Rea Vaya only accepts cash, though.

Gautrain links to Rea Vaya at the Johannesburg Park Station. The Rea Vaya station is on the street corner on the southwesterly side of the Gautrain Johannesburg Park station. The following Rea Vaya buses leaving Johannesburg Park Station stop directly in front of the main entrance of UJ's APK campus (the conference venue): T3 and C5. The fee for a one-way trip between Johannesburg Park station and UJ varies between R6.50 and R7.50.

The Gautrain has the following other stations on the main line, listed in order from the most northerly station to the southern terminus (which is Johannesburg Park): Hatfield, Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Marlboro, Sandton, Rosebank and Johannesburg Park. A trip from Hatfield to Jhb Park costs R56, while shorter trips charge smaller amounts. Gautrain also has an airport line from OR Tambo airport to Sandton station. Airport passengers wishing to get to Jhb Park station need to transfer trains at Sandton. The airport line is quite expensive though: R135 for a one-way trip to Sandton.

Both Gautrain and Rea Vaya are modern rapid transit systems that are kept to good standards (with Gautrain being truly world-class) and are safe to use. One seldom waits more than 10 minutes for a Rea Vaya bus, although there are occasional longer delays. Gautrain runs on a clockwork schedule, with trains every 12 minutes during peak hours and every 20 minutes during off-peak.
