This paper reports on the role played by Foundation Physics course in preparing students for first year university physics. The performance of students who enrolled for and those who did not enroll for Foundation Physics after Grade 12 were compared in first year physics. 57 students who enrolled for Foundation Physics before and 107 students who did not enroll for Foundation Physics before first year physics wrote mechanics examinations and a mechanics questionnaire known as the Force Motion and Conceptual Evaluation.
