DESCRIPTION:\n    WHAT IS A SYNCHROTRON?\n    The thirst for knowledge dri
 ves us to explore the world around us. What is our planet made of? What ar
 e the processes that sustain life? How can we explain the properties of ma
 tter and develop new materials? Will it one day be possible to conquer vir
 uses\, predict natural catastrophes or eliminate pollution? Most of these 
 questions cannot be answered without a profound knowledge of the intimate 
 details of the structure of matter. To help in this quest\, scientists hav
 e developed ever more powerful instruments capable of resolving the struct
 ure of matter down to the level of atoms and molecules. Synchrotron radiat
 ion sources\, which can be compared to "supermicroscopes"\, reveal invalua
 ble information in numerous fields of research. There are about 50 synchro
 trons in the world being used by an ever growing number of scientists..\nT
 he next Science @ Synchrotron 2012 conference and workshop will be held f
 rom 3 - 7 Spetember 2012\n\nConference : 3 - 4 September 2012\nWe will sta
 rt off the meeting with a two-day conference where South African and inte
 rnational scientists will showcase their results from synchrotron-based 
 research.\n\nHands on workshop: 5 - 7 September 2012\nThis will be followe
 d by a three-day hands-on workshop led by international experts on:\n\n 
    \n        X-ray Absorption Techniques\,\n    \n        Residual stress 
 and texture analysis in coatings and manufacturing components\,\n    \n   
      Diffraction and radiation damage in biological samples\,  and\n    \
 n        Image processing and Paleontology.\n\nStudents Bursaries\n\n    F
