DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Christine Darve (European Spallation Source)\, Doria
n Bohler (Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC))\, Riccardo Bartol
ini (DESY)\, Tabbetha Dobbins (Rowan University)\nThe Conceptual Design Re
port (CDR) is an important founding document for any large scale research
infrastructure. In the case of the African Light Source (AfLS\, we will ha
 ve a CDR with four volumes:\n * Volume I. Political\, Economic Developm
ent and Management Concepts\n * Volume II. Machine Design Concepts\n
  * Volume III. Scientific Cases and Technical Capabilities \n * Volume
IV. Integrated Site Design and Construction\nThe spirit of the document is
community consultation\, and it will ultimately be written by experts\, i
ncluding those from the global community. It is Africa owned\, and exhibit
the spirit of Ubuntu.\nThis presentation has two parts. In the first we d
escribe the CDR Document\, and look at its sections\, their intentions and
target audiences.\nWe then lay out the CDR Roadmap process including the
community consultation in virtual workshops by subject area\, to elicit ma
ny White Papers\, especially for the scientific case. The the process unfo
lds as to the mechanism of managing the vision and quality\, as well as co
herence of the CDR document. \nFollowing this we will describe the work do
ne so far on the White Paper for Volume II as an example. This Volume deal
s with the machine aspects\, and contextualises this discussion against in
 ternational developments.\n\nhttps://events.saip.org.za/event/211/contribu
