Physics Publication Productivity in South Africa

Presented by Dr. Alan MATTHEWS on 13 Jul 2012 from 11:00 to 11:20
Type: Oral Presentation
Track: Track F - Applied Physics

Abstract

Publication productivity of university physicists in South Africa was analysed over the period 2009-2011, with focus on 2010. Numbers of publications over 3 years, and author share of publications in 2010, were counted for 220 physicists from the ranks of Lecturer to Full Professor in 17 South African universities (not including universities of technology). Productivity was analysed by rank, and compared with a sample of 10 USA physics departments of similar and somewhat higher position in the Shanghai Jiao Tong world ranking. Also analysed was the distribution of number of authors per publication. This bibliometric study provides South African university physicists with perspective on current national productivity norms. The analysis is purely quantitative and does not address the issue of quality or significance of publications.
