With the increasing advancements in science and technology the artificial divisions between the various disciplines is increasingly becoming less distinct. More and more there is a need to undertake multi-disciplinary research and development. Therefore the scientists and technology developers now and in the future will need to acquire skills and techniques in more than one area. These developments have been undergoing in Europe, America and Asia for the past 20 years. Africa has only just started to appreciate the benefits of such a direction. Unfortunately the education and training programmes are 10 – 20 years behind the rest of the developed world.

This talk will be around the model vocational training programme that was being developed in a unique collaboration between the CSIR Biosciences and UNISA. The talk will describe the principles behind the vocational learning programme and the mechanism as to how the programme would operate. This will include a case study example of how the programme is being implemented within CSIR Biosciences. The final part of the presentation will be on future plans and developments.
