Femtosecond laser pulse shaping using a 4f-pulse shaper

Abstract

A computer controlled Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) in a 4f-geometry has been shown to be a versatile tool for manipulating the amplitude and phase of the spectral components in an ultra short femtosecond laser pulse. In doing so, it is possible to arbitrarily shape a femtosecond laser pulse in time. These shaped pulses have many applications ranging from materials processing to coherent control. This work will focus on explaining the operation and layout of the 4f-pulse shaper, including the functioning of the SLM, and we will present some examples to illustrate the power of this pulse shaping technique.
